Hi Tim,

That's my thread there and I'm sad to hear you haven't had success so far. In my case I was using GeoServer + GeoWebCache + GeoExt/Ext JS

What I did was use the URL for the icons as if the layer had come directly from the WMS and not the cache.

http://localhost:8080/geoserver/wms?TRANSPARENT=true&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetLegendGraphic&EXCEPTIONS=application%2Fvnd.ogc.se_xml&FORMAT=image%2Fgif&LAYER="

If you look at the part of the link I highlighted in red that's the link to my WMS, not my cache.

The only other thing I can think of is proxy issues? I think I had to add GWC to the proxy admin list of GeoServer so that requests could be allowed. If GeoServer is what your using and do not have the proxy extension installed, look here:

http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/GeoServer+Proxy+Extension

I really hope this helps you. It's a little hard for me to remember because I ended up getting rid of the legend panel and changed my trees to have the icons of my map layers, one could now say my tree is also a legend :D
Hi Tim,

I had the same issue. In the end I created a wrapper script that
would generate tiles for any WMS formatted request, or return a
legend file (currently not cached but I hope to add that).
Python script at
https://bitbucket.org/geographika/mapserver-scripts/src/tip/tilecache/tilecache.py
and blog post at http://geographika.co.uk/using-tilecache-on-iis

Regards,
