Hi Daniel,
Eric will correct me if I'm wrong but what you are looking for (ie. filter
by map extent) doesn't exist in GeoExt natively.
If you were using MapFish, I would advice you to take a look at the
Searcher.Map class and its BOX search filter.
There may be another pure client side method I'm not aware of.
