I agree. I'll try and come up with a small test case to demonstrate my other
issue, and hopefully prove it out as a bug. I'll then fill out an issue
ticket.

please create a ticket for GeoExt. From your descriptions, it seems that
the fixed Google layer issue and the issue with loading your GeoTiff
layer in GeoExt when the tree gets rendered are not related.
