If you are using openlayers with geoext you can have a look at this
http://trac.osgeo.org/openlayers/wiki/Addins/LoadingPanel

[Users] How to show a loadmask when a wms layer is being loaded?

Hi,

Some layers take ages to load. To allow the user to know that it´s being
laoded I would like to add a loadmask to the mappanel.

I´ve tried all the simple stuff like adding

" loadMask : {msg:'Loading Data...'}," to the geoext mappanel config...

but to no avail.

Any clues?

cheers,

Rob
