I use the same doctype and MapPanel without any problems.
My opening html tag is <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
I do not know what your problem is. I'm replying to let you know what you are doing works in other environments.

Subject: [Users] Problems with doctype in the top of document
Hi all, anyone could tell me why when I am using GeoExt MapPanel to contain a openlayers map this map is not shown in the page when I use the sentence "<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">" int the top of the document. When I remove the doctype sentence all works fine and the map is shown. I´m getting crazy. I don´t know how to solve it.
Please, could anyone help me?
Thx a lot!!!
