[Users] Making per-layer context menus

Dear List,

I am seeking guidance for making a Panel with stacked layers that are 
created from another (catalog) Panel and where each Layer can be 
manipulated with opacity, visibility etc and the layer-stacking changed. 
Best is to show an example:

That nice/simple example, made with MapFish (MF), does exactly what I 
need (the two panels "Catalog" and "Layer Selection" on the left) but it 
is difficult to find out how this was done, or even what to search for, 
so any guidance is appreciated. Another similar example is found in the 
2D map visualization in http://www.geoportail.fr but this site is broken 
in FF4 (possibly the new JS async loading).
