[Users] Why GeoExt vs OpenLayers + ExtJS ?

Hi all, I'm trying to get my head around what GeoExt is, compared to the
standalone OpenLayers and ExtJS offerings. I've only ever coded with the
Sencha GWT components and OpenLayers GWT as well so *real* JavaScript is
pretty new to me. Can someone please explain what GeoExt can do that makes
it easier ? better ? building map clients ?

My task is to create mainly maps with WFS map layers, with ogc filters
dynamically created from a form for multiple layers. I need to be able to
use custom ogc filter functions we are writing in GeoServer as well. I'd
like to have dropdowns with layer names, field names, operators, spatial
functions, etc. Sort of like the filter dialog in the OpenJump WFS plug-in
if you have seen that, but more integrated and polished.

Thanks, and is there a searchable archive for this list somewhere ? I
didn't see anything on Nabble.
